“But let justice roll on like a river,
righteousness like a never-failing stream!”
Amos 5:24
It was back in 2017 that my family went up to San Francisco for daughter Lizzy’s “White Coat Ceremony” as she embarked on her doctoral training at CSUSF/UCSF to become a physical therapist.
During the weekend we went on a walking tour of San Francisco and we eventually arrived at the Yerba Buena Gardens and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial that was located there.
As we approached the MLK Memorial, we came upon a 50” x 20’ foot wall of cascading water that made a roaring noise that drowned out the noises of busting city around us. At the entrance were the words from the Prophet Amos where we could physically and emotionally experience these words. It dramatically reminded me that God’s justice and righteousness would roll on like a never-failing stream and as a Christ-follower, I need to be a person who championed justice and righteousness in the world.
This Monday, January 16 as a nation, we honor Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and his legacy by taking part in community service projects. Whether it is an organized service project or just you as an individual serving others, make this day (or another day this weekend) where you will in some small way, display God’s justice and righteousness like a never-failing stream.
What can you do? Here are a few suggestions:
- Donate blood through the Red Cross or the San Diego Blood Bank
- Volunteer at the Lakeside HELPS Center
- Volunteer for Family Night at the East County Transitional Living Center
- Sew labels on donated blankets for Project Linus
- Volunteer as a driver for Meals on Wheels Pa delivering meals to seniors.
Be a blessing of justice and righteousness in honor of Rev. King and I am looking forward to seeing you and hearing your stories on how you volunteered.
